Seattle Unity Church—Offered on a love offering basis
Activate Your Dreams enables you to fulfill your dreams in two ways: to identify and leap over your inner blocks: and to identify and activate your powerful inner capacities.
In this workshop I bring a framework for understanding our minds, our thinking. It is a synthesis of ideas from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), cognitive linguistics and deep spirituality. Here is an image that shows the three fields of practice can blend together to help you activate your dreams:
NLP is a field of study and practice I entered and helped to co-create in 1978. (For a longer overview, go here.) The idea at the time was to use ideas from cognitive science, such as linguistics and philosophy of the mind to reveal the learnable patterns in the "magical" work on personal and family change in exemplary therapists. We started with Virginia Satir (a co-founder of the field of family therapy), Milton Erickson (founder of Ericksonian Hypnotherapy), and Fritz Perls (founder of gestalt therapy). By using concepts from linguistics, computer science and philosophy the co-developers of NLP grew a body of methods that helped to enhance the skills of hundreds of thousands of professional change agents, including therapists, psychologists, coaches, consultants, and managers.
My own involvement in NLP started in 1978 while in graduate school studying human relations when I began attending NLP workshops but on by John Grinder, Judith DeLozier, Richard Bandler, Stephen Lankton, Steve Andreas, and Connirae Andreas. I began offering NLP workshops by 1980 with Ramon Corrales, a family therapist. I began using NLP in my own practice as well, focusing on helping individuals, couples, families, and larger organizations, including National Steel Service Centers, and many other organizations.
In 1992 I and six other NLP co-developers wrote a summary of NLP methods to date in the form of an audio recording set. It is titled NLP: The New Technology of Achievement. In 1994 we published it as a book by the same title. The audio recordings have since been released by Nightingale-Conant on CDs as a set here.
In 1998, I published another summary of NLP called The New Fundamentals of NLP. It is has six parts and is an audio recording of a workshop I did by the same name in Colorado. The first of the six sections can be heard here, and the second here.
In all of these NLP publications, I've made an effort to provide a means for readers and listeners to learn methods for adjusting thinking their own thinking, and positively influencing the thinking of others. Increasing skills using the methods of NLP enables people to gain more access to their inner blocks and to leap over them, as well as to identify and your powerful inner capacities. When put in service of fulfilling your dreams, NLP methods can make a difference.
In the 1990s, after the publication of The New Fundamentals of NLP, I began exploring how other fields could build upon what worked in NLP and through the range of existing counseling theories and methods I knew. I began studying the work of George Lakoff, Mark Johnson and Mark Turner in the new field of cognitive linguistics. George Lakoff and Mark Johnson wrote Metaphors We Live By, showing how we think using metaphors. The books by Mark Turner The Literary Mind and The Way We Think are prime among those books that provide a basis for understanding the contributions of cognitive linguistics to activating dreams. These works show how literary concepts and conceptual blending work to form a basis for understanding human thought.
A colleague of mine in NLP, Steve Andreas, began a quest to apply cognitive linguistics to the process of change, which led to three books using cognitive linguistics to help people activate their dreams. The first is called Transforming Your Self, publishing in 2003. Then in 2007 he published two more on cognitive linguistics. These books are Six Blind Elephants, Volumes 1 and 2. Together they show how the way we human beings categorize, use scale, and use a database of examples to form any concept. Along the way, several problems in NLP that didn't correspond with science are resolved.
To engage in deep spirituality is to tap into and harvest the best practices in the esoteric traditions of the great world religions, new thought, and Unity teachings. A number of books have inspired me over the decades of spiritual study and practice. Perhaps the most inspiring and useful to me are Aldous Huxley's The Perennial Philosophy; Karen Armstrong's The Great Transformation; Tolstoy's The Kingdom of God is Within You; and several others.
These three bodies of knowledge combine to provide a framework for activating your dreams.
Yes, dream dreams, AND THEN do what it takes to make them come true!
I'll do my best to demonstrate how to make that happen on November 19th at Seattle Unity Church.
